From the simple, blue façade of this colonial house, you would never guess what lies behind. Ring the bell to be admitted to a large, airy whitewashed temple to contemporary Mexican art, whose library is scattered with art reviews. Beyond the reception area and Sala de Tertulias is a large, colonnaded patio (breakfast here on fresh exotic juices, fruits, home-baked breads, eggs with black beans, tortillas, avocado, sour cream and cheese to set you up for a week) with sunken bar, leading to a second courtyard lush with banana trees and hibiscus.
There are only seven rooms, all different. Opt for the beautiful two-floor suite overlooking the pool. In its own open-plan, multi-windowed building, with sweeping stone staircase, cosy niches for desk and TV watching, it offers romantic seclusion.
Casa Oaxaca is noted for the innovative and excellent cuisine of chef Alejandro Ruiz, who also runs the nearby Casa Oaxaca restaurant (try his chilli stuffed with ceviche and passion fruit sauce). The hotel is also unique for its temazcal - a tiny hut in which stones are heated and you are enclosed, together with a rattle and bucket full of herb-enriched water, to chant away your demons under the guidance of the delightful Don Ignacio.
