The holding of “Hill’s Mondays Feast” takes place in Oaxaca City, there are 2 consecutive Monday following the July 16 and is an event that includes all the Oaxacan people, irrespective of social status.

Apparently, this holiday has its origins in colonial times and are related to the call of the feast of Corpus Christi Church del Carmen Alto, Carmelites built the temple at the foot of a hill to which the Zapotecs had called the Bella Vista, and was being held on Sunday following the July 16 and was repeated eight days later in the so-called “eighth”.
These festivities, will soon add the enthusiasm of the indigenous residents in the villages surrounding the city, particularly those of “Guaxaca”, which was the capital of Valle del Marquesado Hernan Cortes granted by the king of Spain, and Xochimilco, which had been founded in 1521, by his own orders Hernan Cortes, north of that city. They maintained their own traditions, according to which celebrated a holiday dedicated to Centeotl, goddess of tender maize or corn, quin made great honors and offerings.
The inevitable interrelationship between groups and commitment of the evangelizers to make acceptable the imposition of Catholic rites, made possible the building of a cult in which incorporated elements of the indigenous tradition, making more spectacular and festive liturgies external from the time that Indians, blacks and Spaniards began to live more intensely.
In the Hill’s Mondays Feast becomes popular enthusiasm for continuing with the old traditions.
As part of these festivities are part of the current celebrations on Hill’s Mondays Feast, which now emphasizes the spectacle of dance music, dances and songs called Guelaguetza.
