Oaxaca Mexico Weblog / » Festivals and Celebrations in Oaxaca Mexico: Dance Party Of The GodsIf you needed a good nudge to go back to Oaxaca after last fall’s political unrest, may we present the Guelaguetza, Oaxaca’s exuberant festival of traditional dance and music celebrating life, sharing and giving back to the community.Sometimes referred to as Lunes de Cerro (“Monday on the Hill”), the pageantry takes place on two Mondays, July 23 and 30, at Cerro del Fortín, an amphitheater with panoramic city views. Groups from the seven regions of the valley of Oaxaca perform traditional dances and toss local gifts to spectators to symbolize sharing. A parade and fireworks enliven the spectacle. Named after a Zapotec word for “offering,” the annual festival honors Centeotl, goddess of corn, and is a bid to the gods for a bountiful harvest. Spanish missionaries later incorporated the festival into the celebration of the Virgin of El Carmen. Most of the crowds come from Mexico’s larger cities and from Europe, but more North Americans are discovering the Guelaguetza. Because of the festival’s popularity, tickets ($50) are available only in conjunction with hotel reservations.Source:sfgate.com Volver a HOME Post relacionados No related posts Estas leyendo la entrada Festivals and Celebrations in Oaxaca Mexico: Dance Party Of The Gods Monday, July 2nd, 2007 a las 12:55 pm y esta categorizada en Oaxaca Tourism.
