The location — near shops, museums, and restaurants — is great. Rooms are simply furnished and not well lit and a little worn. Three have balconies over the street; the rest are off the interior patio. Most have a double bed. Except for the three rooms with balconies, all of the rooms are quiet. Covering colonial Mexico, as I do, the novelty of these places has worn off some, but I admire this particular establishment. I liked it better when it was kept a bit dark and felt more monastic, but even now it has wonderful character. (Ver Oaxaca Hotels) There is an idiosyncrasy in the rooms that is fun, and these are furnished with more flair and just as much comfort as at the Camino Real. What the San Pablo doesn’t have are the other’s expansive courtyards, the grounds, the pool, or the large staff and hence the service, but there’s a big price advantage, which in my book more than makes up for the lack of 24-hour room service — but then again, I’m inured to such hardship. All the rooms here are large suites with either a king or two double beds. The owners are supposed to be installing A/C in them this year, so if that’s important to you, inquire when you make a reservation. Get an interior room for the sake of quiet. The hotel is 2 blocks from the zócalo. It’s a great choice for those traveling with kids: The Cruz family lives here with a couple of their children, and parrots hang out in the shady garden. From the rooftop terrace, you can admire the view and soak up some sun. Most rooms are plain but comfortable; some share bathrooms. Across the street in the new wing are three additional rooms with double beds and private bathrooms, plus four furnished, full-service apartments with fully equipped kitchens. Breakfast, at extra cost, is served on the patio. At Christmas, the family involves guests in the traditional Mexican celebrations or posadas, which are held during the 12 nights before Christmas. Rates rise 30% for Easter, Guelaguetza, Día de los Muertos, and Christmas. Address Aldama 404 Location Col. Several beautiful courtyards with age-old walls bring to mind the original purpose of the building. The rooms, however, do not. All are comfortable, well furnished, and have the conveniences you would expect in a hotel of this caliber (no small feat given the constraints imposed by the infrastructure). Exterior rooms have triple-glazed windows to reduce noise. Higher prices are for interior rooms with views of the courtyards. The main difference between “deluxe” and “club” is the size of the room. Service is good. The location — between the zócalo and Santo Domingo on a pedestrian-only street — is ideal. On Friday evenings the hotel holds a Guelaguetza, a regional dance show with dinner buffet ($30); on Saturday evenings there’s a mariachi show with dinner buffet ($17). It is only 8 blocks from the zócalo and 6 blocks from Santo Domingo, but it is about 30m (100 ft.) uphill on a noisy street. All the rooms are away from the street, however, past a courtyard restaurant. The well-lit, beautifully decorated rooms hold two twin beds; a few rooms have either two doubles or a king. Bathrooms are attractive and spacious, with shower/tub combinations.
