MUSEO DE ARTE CONTEMPORÁNEO DE OAXACA

Three of its thirteen halls contain a permanent exhibition of famous Oaxacan artists, while the other ten are used for temporary exhibits and cultural events.

MUSEO DE ARTE PREHISPÁNICO DE MÉXICO RUFINO TAMAYO

Rufino Tamayo, who donated the building to house his collection of pre-Hispanic pieces from Maya, Zapotec, Toltec, Aztec, Totonac and Huastec cultures, one of the finest in the country.

MUSEO DE LAS CULTURAS DE OAXACA

The fourteen halls of this museum, set in the former convent of Santo Domingo, display the different cultures that developed in Oaxaca, as well as a fascinating collection of jewels found in Tomb 7 in Monte Albán.

MUSEO DE SITIO DE MONTE ALBAN

The two halls provide an overview of the emergence and development of this archaeological site.
On display are ceramics, carved stelae, tombstones, sculptures, photographs and drawings.
10 km southeast of Oaxaca City.

Urban Tourism in Oaxaca: Entertainment and Sports Events

In Oaxaca, one of Mexico’s most charming cities, you can attend important events and festivities that are known throughout the world for their colorful and strong traditions.

La Guelaguetza – This is the city’s most important festivity. Celebrated on July 16, it offers dance presentations from seven of Oaxaca’s most representative regions. The show takes place in the Guelaguetza Auditorium, located on the Cerro del Fortin. The auditorium holds 11,000 spectators.

Festival de Primavera Rodolfo Morales (Spring Festival) – Celebrated since 1982, this festival forms part of the annual festivities that commemorate the founding of the city. The festival has such diverse activities as music, dance and literature. It takes place in the Teatro Macedonio Alcala, and in various plazas and gardens throughout the city.

Teatro Macedonio Alcala – Located on Avenida Independencia, at 5 de Mayo, in the Historic Center. This is the most important venue in the city. The building is an eclectic design, blending artistic styles from the Renaissance period with those of France’s Louis XIV era. Numerous events take place here, including the Festival de Primavera Rodolfo Morales.

Oaxaca Tourism: Amusement and Recreation

In Oaxaca City you can visit two excellent places that offer culture, entertainment and amusement for the whole family.

Jardin Historico Ethnobotanico de Oaxaca – Located next to the Templo y Ex-Convento de Santo Domingo de Guzman. Here you can see various plant species that inhabit Oaxaca’s surrounding areas.

Planetario Nundehui – Located at the top of the Cerro del Fortin. This modern research center is equipped with a planetarium where kids can learn about the planets, stars and other celestial bodies in a fun and interactive manner. The daily tours begin at 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm.

Cultural Tourism in Oaxaca: Museums

Oaxaca City has a wide variety of museums with an extensive collection of archaeological, historical and artistic pieces from Oaxaca. Among the most important are:

Museo de Arte Contemporaneo (Contemporary Art Museum) – Located at 202 Macedonio Alcala, north of the Historic Center. This legendary building, which was allegedly inhabited by conquistador Hernan Cortes, is currently one of the most important examples of civic architecture during Oaxaca’s Viceregal era.

Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca (Museum of Oaxacan Culture) – Located inside the Ex-Convent de Santo Domingo de Guzman, on Macedonio Alcala Street, at the corner of Adolfo Gurrion. Part of the exhibit at this museum focuses on an important collection of regional pre-Hispanic archaeological pieces. Archaeologist Alfonso Caso found many of the objects at Tumba 7 in Monte Alban. Open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 to 8:00.

Museo de Arte Prehispanico Rufino Tamayo (Pre-Hispanic Museum of Art) – Located at 503 Avenida Morelos, this museum houses an important collection of nearly 1,000 pre-Hispanic objects that were collected over a 20-year period by famed Oaxacan painter Rufino Tamayo. Open Monday through Wednesday from 10:00 to 2:00 and 4:00 to 7:00, and Sunday from 10:00 to 8:00 (see attractions in Oaxaca). Source:visitmexico.com
